Low-Carb Options at Mexican Restaurants: A Healthy and Delicious Solution

Blog

Enjoying delicious Mexican food doesn't have to mean sacrificing your health goals. While traditional Mexican cuisine can be heavy in carbohydrates and unhealthy fats, there are plenty of low-carb options available at Mexican restaurants that can keep your nutrition on track while still satisfying your taste buds.

Skip the rice and beans: Mexican rice and refried beans are two staple items on almost every Mexican restaurant's menu. While they are delicious, they are high in carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. Instead, ask your server for extra veggies to replace the rice and beans. Most Mexican restaurants offer a variety of vegetable options.

Order tacos without the tortilla: If you're craving the flavor of authentic Mexican tacos but want to limit your carb intake, ask for your tacos to be served in a bowl instead of a tortilla. This will eliminate the unnecessary carbs in the tortilla while still allowing you to enjoy all the delicious flavors of the filling. Try ordering your tacos with grilled chicken or steak and lots of veggies like peppers and onions.

Choose grilled protein: When it comes to protein options, grilled is always a better choice than fried. Grilled chicken, steak, and shrimp are all great low-carb options that are packed with protein and flavor. Skip items like chimichangas and fried fish tacos which are high in carbs and unhealthy fats.

Go easy on the cheese and sour cream: While cheese and sour cream are delicious and low in carbs, they are also high in calories and unhealthy fats. Try limiting the amount of cheese and sour cream you add to your meal. Opt for salsa or guacamole, which are packed with flavor and healthy fats.

Don't forget about the salad: Most Mexican restaurants offer a variety of delicious salads that are low in carbs and packed with flavor. Look for salads that are topped with grilled chicken or shrimp and lots of veggies. Avoid salads that are loaded with rice, beans, and cheese.

Eating healthily while dining out at a Mexican restaurant doesn't have to be a challenge. With a little bit of creativity and planning, you can enjoy all the delicious Mexican flavors while still sticking to your low-carb goals. Remember to skip the rice and beans, choose grilled proteins, go easy on the cheese and sour cream, and don't forget about the salad. Next time you're dining out at a Mexican restaurant, try some of these low-carb options, and you'll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you.

Enjoying New Restaurants

As soon as I started traveling a lot for work, I realized that I was going to be eating out--a lot. Instead of just visiting the same old fast-food restaurants that I had grown up with, I decided that it would be great to explore exciting new restaurants. I started small, by going to little places that had earned high ratings, and then I worked my way up to some of the more fancy establishments in the area. It was really great to see what I was able to find, and I was super pleased to explore so many new kinds of foods. Check out this blog for tips on enjoying new restaurants.
